EXTENSION for EXP3

Hi All,

After hearing from a few different student reps regarding the 3 hour exam on Tuesday for Environments, and in consultation with the tutors, I've agreed to an extension for EXP3 for all students until Monday the 30th of June by 11:59pm.

The course outline and EXP3 brief has been updated to reflect this decision.

Good luck!

ERROR IN ARCH1101 TEST!

Hi All,

It has been brought to my attention that there is an error in the ARCH1101 lecture test.

When I spoke about the Metropol Parasol in the lecture I mentioned that it was in Barcelona, and this is the correct answer in the test ... however it is actually in another Spanish city, Seville.

So if you get this question in the test the use the answer Barcelona and you will get the 1 point.

Very sorry for any confusion or frustration caused. However, if you are still below 90% you will need to resit the test.

Regards

Russell

Lecture Test 2014 update

Hi All,

Congratulations to all those students who have passed the test so far ... and especially those who have achieved 100%, well done.

With only a few days to go I'll take this opportunity to remind those who have yet to attempt the test, or have less than 90%, that you wont pass the course unless you have passed the lecture test with 90% or above. Please take this very seriously.

Regards

123dMake

Hi All,

A student rep asked for more details on the 123dMake software that helps you turn a 3d digital model into a physical model.

You'll see from the video below there is a range of approaches you can take.

The website to download this free software is here:  http://www.123dapp.com/make

123dCatch is also pretty useful.

Transferring Lumion files between Computers

Hi All,

Please find my advice for transferring Lumion files between computers on the course forum; the thread is called "Lumion Difficulty".

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/arch1101-2014/uW111L85O-w

This is so you can bring the work you've done on your own computers to the UNSW BE labs and use our version of Lumion to capture images and video (which is optional) that doesn't have the watermarks all over it.

It's also useful to know for backing up your work.

Extension for Engineering with Architecture students

Attention all 'Engineering with Architecture' students,

Your student reps told me that you have a couple of clashes with the ARCH1101 hand in schedule.

I can confirm you'll have a 24hr extension for Experiment 2; because of the clash with your engineering "quiz".

You'll also receive an extension for Experiment 3, but I have to confirm the length of this with the student center.

Hi All,

Jeremy Harkins, director of INENI realtime, and one of our tutors in ARCH1101 has kindly accepted my request to give his best tips and tricks in using SketchUp.

He'll be presenting during tomorrows lecture, so get there early to get a seat up the front ... I can assure you it will be worth it!

Rusty Textures

Hi All,

Here is a link to Wesley Tang's blog where he shows some cars, modified in Sydney, where they explore different techniques for creating rust on the bodywork.

http://wesleytang92.blogspot.com.au/2014/03/wesley-tang.html

I'm always interested in how students bring their own personal interests into their design work. Thanks Wesley.

Here's a couple of my favorite BMW's from the net:

Student Rep Meeting 1

Hi All,

I had a productive meeting with your student reps yesterday; below are the issues that were raised and actions to be taken:

1. More time to practice with SketchUp in class; I'll ask one of our tutors, Jeremy Harkins, if he will show some advanced tips and tricks in the next few weeks.

2. There was some interest in gaining additional resources for learning SketchUp. Tutorials for stairs, sphere's, manipulating curves, groups, layers and components; I'll put a list together on the class forum to gather useful tutorials (it'll be a sticky at the top of the forum, so it's easy to find).

3. Students wanted to know when SketchUp pro (2014) will be in the labs; I'll follow this up with BECU and let you know.

4. There were questions regarding transferring models between SketchUp pro and make; the answer to this is to export the model as a 3DS or Collada (dae) file type and then you can import it into SketchUp Make. IMPORTANT! be sure to do this before you hit the 8hr trial deadline in SketchUp pro; otherwise you'll need to come to uni to open your pro file on one of the lab machines (see note 3 above). You can also go File > 3d Warehouse > Share Model to upload the model to the 3d Warehouse so your tutors can download it in a file type that suits their SketchUp install.

5. Several students had joined the Arch society .... which i highly recomend ... but they were unable to find the society online. web presence; one student rep mentioned Orgsync ... which is a new for 2014 system that you have to go through to register for societies at UNSW, here's a link: https://orgsync.com/register/university-of-new-south-wales

6. Some students noted that Business, Law and the Medical faculties have camps. The question is can we have a camp for students here at Built Environment? It would be for team building, meeting people from other disciplines and generally having a good time. I'll raise the idea with our head of program, head of school and the Associate Dean of Education and let you know what they think.

7. Finally, there was some interest in internships. One question was, is there a database? I'll follow this up but in the meantime I'll contact our tutors and see whether any need help in their firms.

That's everything I think; if I've missed anything let me know in the comments below.
